AR? STAR? STAR Early Literacy? What's that?
AR stands for Accelerated Reading. AR is an individualized computerized reading assessment program. Our school uses the STAR or STAR Early Literacy reading test to assess your child's reading ability. Your child is assigned a RL or reading level number according to his/her test results. They then read books in their RL and take a computer test for comprehension of the story. AR gives the teacher strategies for helping your child learn to read. We use this program as a supplement to the instructional reading curriculum. AR is a reading motivational tool we use to help your child practice reading. Your child should be read to every day or they should be reading on their own every day. Reading takes practice and we encourage you to enjoy reading with your child! STAR is a reading test we give to our students who are reading independently. STAR Early Literacy is an audio test we give to student's who are in the reading readiness stage. Students in STAR can begin AR because they are able to begin the process of reading alone. Students in STAR Early Literacy do not yet use AR. Reading level numbers or RL's mean the year and month in school your child is reading at independently. For example: An RL of 2.6 means second grade, sixth month. This will give you an idea of the success your child is achieving in reading. There are 6 levels of certifications in AR your child can work towards achieving.

They are:
  • Ready Reader- Accumulate 5 AR points. Parent can read to or with their child.
  • Independent Reader- Read 3 books independently at 1.2 reading level or higher and pass the quizzes. Also, accumulate a total of 10 points. These points include the points earned for the 3 books. The rest of the 10 points may include Read To and Read With books with parent help. (Passing is 80%)
  • Rising Reader- Read 3 books at the 1.6 or higher book level independently and accumulate 10 points independently.
  • Super Reader- Have Independent Reader certification. Read 3 books worth at least one point each and at the 2.0 reading level or higher and pass the quizzes independently. We require that Super Reader be reached 5X.
  • Advanced Reader- Have Super Reader certification. Read 3 books at the 3.0 or higher reading level and worth at least 2 points each and pass the quizzes independently. We require Advanced Reader to be reached 5X.
  • STAR Reader- Read 3 books at the 4.0 reading level or higher worth 4 or more points each and pass the quizzes independently.
RECOGNITION
Our school offers recognition to our students in several ways. When a child reaches a certification in AR their name is announced on our Reading Wall of Fame in our cafeteria. They also receive a certificate in recognition of their achievement and a postcard from Dr. Moore our principal! In May we will celebrate AR with a parade!

Volunteer State Book Award Program

In January and February your child will be listening to 20 books read out loud by their teacher. They will be voting on their favorite book and our school will send a winner to be counted in the statewide voting for the "Volunteer State Award Book 2009!" Tennessee media specialists recommend these books and the Tennessee Association of School Librarians sponsors the program. To see a list of the books please go to Click on the link for 2008/2009 PreK-3 titles and check out the annotations and book jackets for each title. You can also look at the link for the titles that will be read in the 2009/2010 school year.

On Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 3rd our students participated in a nationwide reading event called "Read Across America". On this day we held our school-wide voting for the #1 Volunteer State book in our building. Your child listened to 18 books read by their classroom teacher over a two month period and voted for their favorite. Our school winner was "Bad Kitty". A close second was "Punk Farm". Our winner will be sent in for the state tally for the #1 children’s book in Tennessee!
